Good Samaritan Scholarship |
Objective:
The goal of the Good Samaritan Scholarship of South East Los Angeles is to foster and promote the timeless principal of goodwill among college bound students in South East Los Angeles schools. Our endeavor is to empower these individuals to impact our society through advanced education and giving back to their community. The Good Samaritan Scholarship is a monetary award that shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for students who demonstrate community leadership, academic merit, and financial need. Applications can be obtained at the beginning of each school year.
Foundation Statement In a time when ethical values have become blurred, today’s generation is quickly losing the principal of goodwill in their communities. The goal of the Good Samaritan Scholarship of South East Los Angeles is to foster and promote this timeless principal among college bound students in South East Los Angeles schools. Thus, our endeavor is to empower these individuals to impact our society through advanced education and giving back to their community.
Criteria The Good Samaritan Scholarship is a monetary award that shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for students who demonstrate community leadership, academic merit, and financial need. Applications can be obtained at the beginning of each school year. - The applicant must have a minimum 2.5 academic grade point average.
- The student must provide a copy of their high school transcripts and/or transcript from the last school attended.
- The applicant must complete a personal statement describing, “what it means to be a ‘good Samaritan’, a description of their goals and achievements and why you believe you should be chosen to receive the Good Samaritan Scholarship. You may describe any community you have volunteered for to support your statement.
- The applicant must complete and submit an application form by the given deadline.
- Must be a graduating senior of a public high school in the Los Angeles School District for the current year.
- Must show proof of acceptance to an accredited college or university. All scholarship packages must be complete. Any incomplete packages will not be considered for award.
- Note:
The letter of application is the most important part of the application process. Please take the time to submit a letter that includes all pertinent information.
- Deadline: All required documents for a Good Samaritan Scholarship must be postdated by June 1, 2009.
Selection Process
- The Works of Power Board of Directors shall make selection of the recipient(s).
- Recipients will be chosen based on:
- Completed application form.
- Completed letter of application.
- Need/merit
- Community involvement.
Notification and Payment of Award
- Selected recipients will be notified prior to the Fall semester 2009. The award will be available for payment that fall semester.
Renewal
- This is a one-time award. Students can receive this award once as a graduating high school senior only.
Scholarship Overview
- Educational scholarships are granted to college bound students. The purpose of the scholarship is to pay for a portion of the costs of college tuition. For example, those attending a Junior College Scholarship are awarded $1000 and those attending a 4-year University are awarded $1000-$4000.
- The scholarships will be announced through personal notification to the award recipient either by United States mail or telephone communication to the recipient.
- In order to be eligible for a scholarship: The candidate must have graduated from a LAUSD High School and will attend an accredited junior college or 4 year university.
- Specific criteria for scholarships are that recipients must have a financial need and must exhibit leadership by being involved in his/her community through community service.
- The number of grants will be based on the annual budget. The scholarships are based on the type of college the student will attend i.e. junior college or 4 year university.
- The scholarship will be paid directly to the college or university of the student’s choice. The student must provide proof of enrollment at the college or university. All scholarship monies will be made payable to the school on behalf of the students’ account.
- The Scholarship Selection Committee for 2009 is comprised of: President: Javier F. Rodriguez; Secretary: David Conde. Scholarship Committee Coordinators: Patricia Rengifo, Iris Marlene Hernandez, Henry Almengor , Dianna Enriquez and Juan Torres and Carlos Rocha.

About Us
The founders are Javier and Martha Rodriguez. They have been active in ministry since 1991. Javier Rodriguez is the President of Risco Insurance Services Inc. Javier started his business career in the insurance industry in 1981. Martha is a dynamic Spirit-filled public speaker and mother of four. Their calling is to exhort individuals to go higher in their God ordained purpose in life.
